The challenge of the project When Carmen first entered the space, she was immediately fascinated: one huge, open room with endless possibilities. Together with Jan, she faced the challenge of transforming this empty loft into a home for their family of five. The question was: how can you keep the openness while still creating enough private rooms? That’s how the journey began, turning a blank loft into a functional and cozy family home. The open living area & the “Casitas” From the very beginning, Carmen and Jan knew they wanted to preserve the openness of the space and create one large social area where family life happens. But they also needed separate rooms for everyone. Inspired by Mexican villages and supported by their architects, they developed the idea of small “casitas” within the loft, using different ceiling heights, slopes and translucent elements to let natural light flow through. This created a bright, village-like layout where each family member has their own retreat. A personal entrance area The entrance reflects Carmen’s personality and family story. Fritz’s favorite armchair sits right by the door, he relaxes there every afternoon. Many objects here carry deep meaning: an ocelot sculpture from Mexico symbolizing Carmen’s roots, lion figures from Singapore guarding the entrance, and creative pieces handmade by Jan or created together with his son Fritzi. The entrance becomes a personal gallery of the family’s life. A living room that turns into a playground The living room is the heart of the home. On rainy days, it transforms into a sports arena: the boys grab their badminton rackets and take advantage of the high ceilings for spontaneous tournaments. It’s a space made for playing, laughing and spending time together, flexible and always evolving. Industrial details from the former factory The loft’s industrial character has been preserved through several original elements. In one corner stands an old heater that once warmed the entire floor. A former fire ladder now serves as wood storage, and hooks and metal fittings from the building’s factory days still remain on the walls. These details tell the story of the space and give it authenticity. A colorful, cozy living space Originally, the plan was to keep the interior minimal. But Carmen quickly realized that colors and contrast create the coziness the family needed. Today, the living area is full of vibrant pieces: boots by a Berlin artist, a large blue pineapple from Michoacán as a nod to Carmen’s heritage, and a stunning rug kindly lent by a close friend. Every object has meaning and adds warmth. The kitchen with island & wooden accents The large kitchen island, already part of the apartment, is now the family’s central gathering spot. Mexican touches such as colorful plates from central Mexico and handcrafted copper vases from Michoacán bring personality into the room. The dining table, which was switched to a warm pink at the last minute, is where family and friends come together, a place full of stories and hospitality.
