Valley of the Lagoons | Long Way to Undara from Gold to Lava

Leaving the historic gold town of Charters Towers, we head north into the remote savannah country of inland North Queensland on our journey toward Undara Volcanic National Park. Rather than taking the highway, we detour through the spectacular Valley of Lagoons — one of the most picturesque and historic landscapes explored by Ludwig Leichhardt during his epic 1845 expedition to Port Essington. Leichhardt described the valley as the most beautiful landscape his party had encountered on the journey. This ride takes us through vast cattle country, volcanic basalt plains, wetlands, winding dirt roads and endless outback scenery as we push deeper into Queensland’s Gulf Savannah region. Along the way we trace part of the old exploration routes that helped open up inland North Queensland. Eventually we reconnect with the Kennedy Developmental Road and arrive at the incredible Undara Volcanic National Park, home to some of the world’s longest lava tube systems and rich outback wildlife.
