When Shankaracharya Saw Krishna in Puri — Jagannath Ashtakam V.1-2 @vinniekakkar7579
What happened when Adi Shankaracharya — the great proponent of Advaita Vedānta and the formless Brahman — walked into the Jagannath Temple at Puri? He was so overwhelmed by the divine darshan of Lord Jagannath that he sat down and composed one of the most beloved Sanskrit stotras ever written — the Śrī Jagannātha Aṣṭakam — eight verses of pure, ecstatic devotion, each ending with the heart-prayer of every devotee: 🙏 Jagannāthaḥ svāmī nayana-patha-gāmī bhavatu me — May Lord Jagannath Swami be the object of my vision. In today's class, we explore the first two verses of this immortal hymn with depth, devotion, and joy. 🎶 Verse 1 — The Bumblebee of Vrindavan kadācit kālindī-taṭa-vipina-saṅgīta-karavo mudābhīrī-nārī-vadana-kamalāsvāda-madhupaḥ ramā-śambhu-brahmāmara-pati-gaṇeśārcita-pado jagannāthaḥ svāmī nayana-patha-gāmī bhavatu me Shankaracharya opens with the Vrindavan Krishna — not the cosmic creator, not the impersonal Brahman, but the enchanting flute-player by the banks of the Yamunā. He who fills the forest groves with music. He who is like a bumblebee relishing the lotus faces of the joyful Gopīs of Vraja. He at whose lotus feet the greatest in all the three worlds bow down — Lakṣmī, Śiva, Brahmā, Indra, and Gaṇeśa — all of them worshipping His feet. The stunning implication: Shankaracharya, the very ācārya associated with the impersonal Brahman, is praying to the personal Krishna. As Śrīla Prabhupāda confirms — Shankaracharya sees Jagannath as Krishna, adored by the Gopikās and as Viṣṇu, served by all demigods. Even the greatest impersonalist melts before Lord Jagannath. 🦚 Verse 2 — The Flute, the Peacock Feather & the Sidelong Glance bhuje savye veṇuṁ śirasi śikhi-picchaṁ kaṭi-taṭe dukūlaṁ netrānte sahacara-kaṭākṣaṁ ca vidadhat sadā śrīmad-vṛndāvana-vasati-līlā-paricayo jagannāthaḥ svāmī nayana-patha-gāmī bhavatu me In His left hand Lord Jagannātha holds a flute. On His head He wears the feathers of peacocks and on His hips He wears fine yellow silken cloth. Out of the corners of His eyes He bestows sidelong glances upon His loving devotees and He always reveals Himself through His pastimes in His divine abode of Vṛndāvana. This is one of the most visually exquisite verses in all of Vaiṣṇava literature. Shankaracharya paints Jagannath as the eternal Vṛndāvana-vāsī — permanently residing in and revealing Himself through the pastimes of Vrindavan. The kaṭākṣa — the sidelong glance from the corner of His eyes — is one of the most celebrated gestures of the Lord. It is not a casual glance. The hymn encapsulates the deep essence of bhakti (devotion), surrender, and divine vision. That single glance is the Lord's act of grace — falling upon His devoted companions, transforming them, liberating them. And Shankaracharya prays — may that Lord of Vrindavan be the object of my vision. Not Brahmaloka. Not mukti. Not wealth or a beautiful wife. Just this — the divine form of Krishna, ever before my eyes. ✨ Why This Stotra Is So Special The Śrī Jagannātha Aṣṭakam resonated with Caitanya Mahāprabhu, who sang it during his pilgrimage. The most beloved devotee of Lord Jagannath, Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, recited these verses composed by the foremost impersonalist — a beautiful union of all paths of Vedic knowledge at the lotus feet of the Lord. The merit of reciting the sacred Jagannath Aṣṭakam carefully is such that one becomes sinless and pure-hearted and gains entrance to Viṣṇuloka. 🙏 Jai Jagannath! Jai Balabhadra! Jai Subhadra!
