The Hymn That Made Shankaracharya a Devotee — Complete Jagannath Ashtakam | @vinniekakkar7579
What hymn was so powerful that it moved Adi Shankaracharya — the greatest philosopher of impersonal Brahman — to compose eight verses of ecstatic, personal devotion to the Lord of the Universe? What stotra did Sri Chaitanya Mahaprabhu sing with tears in his eyes during his pilgrimage to Puri? What eight verses, when recited with pure devotion, cleanse all sins and carry the soul to Vishnuloka — the eternal abode of the Lord? The answer to all three questions is the same: 🙏 The Sri Jagannatha Ashtakam. In today's special class — perfectly timed as we approach Rath Yatra 2026 (July 16) — we cover all eight verses of this immortal Sanskrit hymn, word by word, meaning by meaning, with the recurring heart-prayer that anchors every verse: Jagannathah swami nayana-patha-gami bhavatu me — May Lord Jagannath Swami be the object of my vision. Verse 1 — The Bumblebee of Vrindavan Shankaracharya opens with the most intimate vision — Krishna by the banks of the Yamuna, filling the forest with music, tasting the lotus faces of the Gopas like a bumblebee tasting honey. He at whose feet Lakshmi, Shiva, Brahma, Indra, and Ganesha all bow down. May that Jagannath Swami be the object of my vision. 🙏 Verse 2 — The Flute, the Peacock Feather & the Sidelong Glance In His left hand a flute. On His head, peacock feathers. At His waist, golden silken cloth. From the corners of His eyes, He bestows sidelong glances of grace upon His companions — the kataksha that liberates. He is the eternal resident of Vrindavana, always revealing Himself through His divine pastimes. May that Jagannath Swami be the object of my vision. 🙏 Verse 3 — Lord of Nilachala, Flanked by Balabhadra & Subhadra On the golden shore of the great ocean, on the peak of Nilachala — the Blue Mountain of Puri — the Lord resides in His palace. His powerful brother Balabhadra stands beside Him. Subhadra stands in the middle. And to all the demigods who come before Him, He graciously grants the opportunity to serve. May that Jagannath Swami be the object of my vision. 🙏 Verse 4 — The Ocean of Mercy, Sung at the Crown of the Vedas He is kripa-paravara — an ocean of mercy without shore or bottom. He is as beautiful as a row of rain-laden monsoon clouds. He is the delight of Lakshmi and Saraswati. His lotus face blooms with spotless purity. His glories are sung at the very crown of the Vedas — the Upanishads. Even Shankaracharya's own texts glorify this personal Lord. May that Jagannath Swami be the object of my vision. 🙏 Verse 5 — The Lord on His Rath Yatra Chariot The Lord rides His great chariot down the Grand Road, surrounded by multitudes of Brahmanas singing prayers at every step. He listens to each prayer with compassion. He is daya-sindhur — the ocean of compassion — and the true friend of all the worlds, accompanied by His beloved Lakshmi, born of the ocean. May that Jagannath Swami be the object of my vision. 🙏 Verse 6 — Para-Brahma, Resting on Shesha, Embracing Radha He is para-brahmapidah — the crown jewel of the Supreme Brahman. His eyes are fully blossomed like the petals of a blue water lily. He rests upon the infinite hoods of Ananta Shesha. He is rasananda — immersed in the bliss of divine rasa — and knows the supreme joy of embracing the beautiful form of Sri Radha. May that Jagannath Swami be the object of my vision. 🙏 Verse 7 — I Ask for Nothing Else Shankaracharya's most personal and moving declaration. He does not ask for a kingdom. He does not ask for gold or jewels. He does not ask for a beautiful wife. He asks for nothing that ordinary men desire — only that the Lord whose glories are eternally sung by Shiva himself be the object of his vision. A complete surrender of all material ambition. May that Jagannath Swami be the object of my vision. 🙏 Verse 8 — O Lord, Destroy My Samsara The final and most urgent verse. Hara tvam samsaram druta-taram — O Lord of the demigods, O Lord of the Yadus, quickly destroy this worthless cycle of birth and death! Quickly destroy the vast accumulation of my sins! It is certain — it is settled — that You place Your feet upon the heads of the fallen, the helpless, the shelter-less. May that Jagannath Swami be the object of my vision. 🙏 The Promise (Phala-shruti) He who recites this sacred Jagannatha Ashtakam with devotion and purity — all his sins are fully cleansed. His soul becomes pure. And he goes to Vishnuloka — the eternal abode of the Lord.
