A maker of one of the strangest funerary artworks in modern art history. In this poetic documentary, I explore the extraordinary life and art of Sofía Bassi — from her sudden emergence as a self-taught painter in midlife, to the Acapulco killing that changed her life forever, to the haunting paintings she created in prison, and finally to the creation of her Ovosarcófago, the egg-shaped sarcophagus she designed for her own final rite. This film looks at her major works, her symbolic universe, her spiritual mythology, and the “dreamlike alchemy” that still makes her work feel so powerful today. I made this documentary because I was astonished by Bassi’s art — and by how rarely she is discussed in English-language film and media. She deserves to be far better known.
