Marcela Tobaldi is the founder of the La Rosa Naranja Civil Association, a space that fights for the rights of the trans community. Currently, “we have a population of elderly women who are suffering greatly,” she said in the Human Rights column of Nada es Sencillo (Nothing is Simple). “The persecution of trans people never stopped. Around 2006, Néstor Kirchner brought together all the civil society organizations to discuss the violence, and from the public human rights agenda, he began to include diverse groups, and from there, it was possible to advance fundamental laws,” Tobaldi explained. Among these laws are the Gender Identity Law, the Equal Marriage Law, and the Trans Employment Quota Law. Tobaldi spoke about the provincial bill for historical reparations for trans people who are victims of institutional violence: “There are people who have suffered up to 48 arrests, up to three months in prison, simply for being trans… What we demand is a pension to improve their quality of life,” Tobaldi said. And she emphasized: “The contempt for the trans community in Argentine culture has been very strong.” The activist also indicated that they have a registry of 450 women who need access to reparations or pensions.
