Experts warn about the environmental impact of AI, while 63% of professionals who use it are unaware of its environmental damage. "If I make a query to ChatGPT, I consume 10 times more energy and emit 50 times more greenhouse gases than if I make the same query to a Google search engine," warned Sol Quiroga, director of the Bachelor's Degree in Urban Environmental Management at the National University of Lanús, in an interview with Todo Tiene Movimiento. The expert explained that water consumption in data centers increased by 400% between 2022 and 2026, and that training a medium-sized search engine consumes the same amount of water as 100 cars running for a year. "63% of professionals who work with artificial intelligence think it doesn't affect the natural environment," denounced Quiroga, who also highlighted that 70% of scientific research on AI only addresses its positive effects. The outlook is not encouraging, but "we still have time" to reverse these impacts, she emphasized. "We have to do it now; we can't wait another 20 years." Among the recommendations, he proposed that governments require companies to inform users about the actual resource consumption of each consultation, similar to food labeling or warnings on cigarette packs.
