The Museum of Old and New Art, MONA, is located on the grounds of the Murilla Winery on the Berriedale Peninsula in Hobart, Australia. It is the largest private museum in the Southern Hemisphere. It features works of art from the David Walsh Collection. It's a shock! This is one of those museums you'll never forget. The architecture by Fender Katsalidis is astonishing in itself—the museum is almost entirely underground. And the exhibition is renowned for its central themes of sex and death. It's a "subversive Disneyland for adults!" In 2014, MONA was named one of Lonely Planet's "Top Ten Places to Visit." I completely agree—it's a must-see! "...imagine a museum that upends virtually every conventional notion of museum practice: an underground museum with no natural light, with a deliberately confusing design to get visitors lost as they wander its halls; "A museum that's incredibly noisy in places and smells really, really bad..."
