I'm in Hobart, the capital of Tasmania, but this time, friends, we won't be hiking through national parks or visiting that famous MONA museum. We'll simply stroll around the city. We'll see its main streets, visit the Town Hall, find ourselves in the port area, and venture into Battery Point. The first European settlement on the site of the modern city arose at the very beginning of the 19th century. The city was named after Lord Hobart, the Colonial Secretary, who decreed that the island of Tasmania be converted into a place of exile for especially dangerous criminals. It was they who built almost everything here: the roads, the port, and the public and residential buildings of the 19th century. The original architectural concept was to recreate "England in miniature" – Hobart became the first in a series of similar colonial cities, followed by "Little Englands" in New Zealand and the South African colony of Natal.
