This wealthy bourgeois town seemed frozen in time 50 years ago, resisting progress with all its might, even banning the railway so it wouldn't disturb the peace of its narcissistic bourgeois inhabitants. Paul's father, Louis-Auguste Cézanne, was an unconventional man by local standards. He came from Italy and started from scratch in a hat shop. He then opened his own business, lending money to farmers at interest so they could breed rabbits for felt. Soon, he seized on the bankruptcy of the town's only bank as an opportunity, becoming a co-owner of the Cézanne and Cabassol bank. By the time his son was born, he was already the richest man in town. And in 1853, he purchased the luxurious estate of Jas de Bouffan, the former residence of the governor of Provence. However, he was never accepted into Aix high society. He was considered an uncouth nouveau riche who had intruded into polite society. He had enough money, but his background was a hindrance. The Aix aristocrats accepted the money but looked down on him, envious yet dismissive. Louis-Auguste dreamed of one thing: for his son to pursue a career as a lawyer and avenge all his father's humiliations by entering the doors that remained closed to Louis-Auguste himself. This passion would leave a profound imprint on Cézanne's entire life. Paul grew up shy, awkward, and extremely sensitive—and with a strong temper. He suffered from haphephobia—a terrifying fear of touch. Later, when working with models, he would go out of his way to avoid casual contact. One day, a fellow artist simply patted him on the back as a sign of admiration—and Cézanne, without a word, packed his things and went home. He never spoke to that man again. Another time, he yelled at a model who bumped into him while posing, so much so that the model ran away and never returned. It was here in Aix, still a child, that the most important meeting of his life took place. In 1852, at the age of thirteen, Paul entered the Collège Bourbon in Aix. There he met a skinny, sickly boy with a Parisian accent and a speech impediment that everyone laughed at: he pronounced "t" instead of "s" and "z" and drooled heavily when speaking. He was constantly bullied—an outsider, small, frail, poor. His name was Émile Zola, the future greatest French novelist, who, because of his burr, called Cézanne "Tétanne." Zola's father died when Émile was seven, leaving the family struggling to make ends meet. Cézanne sided with Zola after some school fight, when he was being bullied yet again—he was the only one who dared to speak to the outcast. The next day, Zola brought him a huge basket of apples and said, "Look at these apples, Tétanne—they've come a long way!"
