The Origins Of Indians Were Never As Simple As We Thought — Ancient DNA Reveals Why

For generations, India’s population history was often explained through simple stories: one original people, one major migration, or a clear division between northern and southern ancestry. Ancient DNA has shown that the real story is far more complex. A landmark genetic study analysed DNA from more than 500 ancient individuals across South and Central Asia. The results indicated that most present-day South Asian populations carry ancestry connected in varying proportions to ancient South Asian hunter-gatherers, an Iranian-related lineage associated with populations of the Indus region, and later Steppe pastoralists. These ancestries did not arrive or mix at one moment—they interacted across thousands of years. The first genome recovered from an individual associated with the Indus Valley Civilization added another surprise. The Rakhigarhi individual carried ancestry related to ancient Iranian populations and deeply rooted South Asian hunter-gatherers, but showed no detectable Steppe pastoralist ancestry. The Iranian-related lineage had also separated from Zagros populations before farming developed there, challenging the idea that agriculture reached South Asia through a simple mass migration of Iranian farmers. After the decline of the Indus Civilization, Indus-related populations mixed differently across the subcontinent. Some groups mixed more extensively with populations carrying deeply rooted South Asian ancestry, while others later received greater Steppe-related ancestry. Geography, language, migration, marriage traditions and centuries of endogamy then produced the extraordinary genetic diversity visible across India today. This documentary explores why there is no single “Indian DNA,” what the Indus Valley genome revealed, how ancient migrations shaped different regions, and why ancestry cannot be reduced to modern caste, language or racial labels.
