Lower back pain is one of the most common problems surfers experience. Long paddling sessions, extended time lying in spinal extension on the board, and explosive pop-ups can put a lot of stress on the lower back. In this video, we take you through a simple 5-exercise warm-up routine designed specifically for surfers with stiff or sore lower back. These exercises can be done at home, in the car park, or on the beach before you paddle out, and they’re designed to help improve mobility, posture, and activation so your body is ready for paddling, popping up, and surfing. The exercises are demonstrated by professional surfer Lakey Peterson, currently ranked #7 on the World Surf League Championship Tour. Lakey has dealt with lower back issues in the past, and some of the movements shown here come directly from her own preparation routine.
