The volcano is still active, and volcanic ash often falls in the surrounding area depending on the wind and volcanic activity. During this drive, you can see coastal roads, volcanic landscapes, quiet local scenery, and views of Sakurajima from different angles. Although the name “Sakurajima” means “Cherry Blossom Island,” it is now connected to the Osumi Peninsula by lava from the great eruption of 1914.
