In this episode, Yasir Feten explains how, throughout its history, it has always been overshadowed by great powers, a refuge for Palestinians on the one hand, and a state sustained by Western bases on the other. Today, Jordan, with its 7.5 million inhabitants largely Palestinian, presents a facade of "stability" to the outside world despite struggling with economic hardship. While its security is ensured by the support of the UK and the US, it actually serves as a buffer zone for Israel's security. With US bases, air defense systems, and Western educational institutions, Jordan is not a region that determines its own future; it is a region caught in the middle of others' calculations. Jordan's history was shaped by the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Empire. Sharif Hussein and the Hashemite family established a kingdom with British support, but the promised "great Arab state" never materialized. In the same year, the British promised the Jews a state in Palestine with the Balfour Declaration, while the Hashemite Kingdom was left alone. The steps taken during those times shaped the problems of today. In these lands, where Palestinian migration began in the 1930s and millions of people settled from Lebanon to Jordan, identity and belonging remain contested. Jordanian or Palestinian? Bedouin, Circassian, the Hashemite dynasty from the Hejaz… All together, yet constantly in conflict. So, in these lands with the largest Palestinian population, do the people consider themselves Jordanians or part of the Palestinian cause? Did Jordan truly exist with its own history, or was it a product of the British and Western schemes?
