The Tragic Story of 400,000 Acres and No Heir: Kenedy Ranch
The Kenedy Ranch covered four hundred thousand acres of the South Texas coastal plain, adjacent to the King Ranch, and for three generations no one outside the family set foot on it without permission. When the last heir died in a New York hospital in 1961, a Trappist monk, a Fortune 500 industrialist, the Vatican, and more than two hundred claimants spent twenty-one years fighting over what she left behind. This documentary traces the Kenedy dynasty from Mifflin Kenedy's arrival in Texas as a steamboat captain during the Mexican-American War in 1846, through the construction of La Casa Grande, a thirty-room reinforced concrete mansion with a Gatling gun mounted on the roof, through the extinction of the bloodline and the largest will contest in Texas legal history. The story also investigates the displaced Mexican land-grant families who held the territory before the Kenedys acquired it, and who still seek historical recognition. The Kenedy Ranch is one of the real South Texas cattle empires behind the world depicted in Dutton Ranch, the Yellowstone sequel currently airing on Paramount+. Viewers who watched our King Ranch documentary will recognize the adjacent landscape, the same border politics, and the same questions about land, inheritance, and power that define this region. Today the ranch is split between two charitable trusts. The mansion is a Catholic silent retreat. Wind turbines spin on the coastal plain. No Kenedy lives there. The family left no bloodline. Only lawsuits. Copyright & Fair Use Notice This video is a non-commercial, educational history documentary produced for research and for purposes of commentary, critique, and analysis.
