The Dark Story of a Killing, a Boomtown, and a Lie: 6666 Ranch

The most famous brand in American ranching is four sixes burned into a hide. The story behind it is not the one the legend tells. In 1871, a young Texas cattleman named Samuel Burk Burnett bought 100 head of cattle already wearing the 6666 brand and built them into an empire of nearly a third of a million acres, much of it grass he leased from the Comanche and the Kiowa for 6.5 cents an acre. In 1912, in the washroom of a small hotel in Paducah, Texas, he shot and killed a poorer rancher named Farley Sayers. A jury acquitted him in under 30 minutes. This documentary follows how one man's brand, his name, and his fortune were built and then defended: the killing the legend later scrubbed away, the disproven poker-game origin myth, the 1918 oil strike that turned the cotton town of Burkburnett into "Boomtown, U.S.A.," the stock swindle that fed on it, and the wife he had declared insane and confined for a decade, who survived him to win half his $6 million fortune in court and give it to the one kind of institution he had sworn would never have it. It closes on the 6666 Ranch itself, held by a single family for 150 years and sold in 2021 for a reported sum approaching $340 million to an investor group tied to the creator of Yellowstone, its dark history long since polished into the romance of the American West.
