By the end of 1959, 42,600 U-Haul trailers were on American roads, and L.S. Shoen — father of twelve children from two marriages — had built one of the most recognizable consumer brands in the United States from a $5,000 stake. On November 8, 1986, his eldest sons Edward "Joe" Shoen and Mark Shoen executed a boardroom coup that stripped their father of operational control of the company he had founded. On August 6, 1990, L.S.'s daughter-in-law Eva Berg Shoen, the Norwegian-born wife of his son Sam Shoen, was shot dead in the family's Telluride mountain home, in a crime the local handyman Frank Marquis later confessed to in 1993. In 1994, a Phoenix jury returned a $1.47 billion verdict in a family lawsuit, then one of the largest in American history, that exposed the full scale of the inheritance war the trailer fortune had created. On October 4, 1999, L.S. Shoen died on US-95 in Nevada in a single-vehicle accident that the Clark County coroner ruled in a way significant members of his family have disputed for more than two decades.
