Homemade Tool Post Grinder - part 1 (spindle clamp)

The next natural project for me is to make a tool post grinder to use in my Colchester Student lathe. I also have the need for a cutter grinder and so it occurred to me that, perhaps, I could design a tool post spindle and drive which could also be included in a cutter grinder. If I had sufficient space in my workshop I probable would have looked for a Clarkson Cutter Grinder to refurbish and focussed instead on making just the tool post grinder. Taking all things into account designing my own combination machine seemed to be a reasonable proposition. In part 1, I start by introducing the project and by making the clamp which holds the spindle. This involves turning and profile milling using a dividing head. 00:00 Why I want to make the combined tool post/cutter grinder 00:55 The concept of combining the two functions into one machine 01:27 Layout drawings of tool post grinder 02:49 Layout drawings of the spindle 03:18 Materials to start the project 03:44 Facing and boring dia 3in mild steel which will form the clamp 09:40 Milling the flat surfaces of the clamp 10:57 Roughing out the curved profile 11:15 Forming the clamping bolt bosses 11:52 Mounting the work on a tapered mandrel 13:00 Profile milling the external radius 13:46 Machining 40 degree angle feature 14:33 Profiling the radius 14:54 Using axial cuts to improve surface finish of the radius 15:57 Milling external curved chamfers 16:49 Tapered mandrel too tight to remove with the arbour press! 17:29 Inspecting surface finish 17:52 Counterboring for socket head screws 18:33 Chamfering 18:52 Next video
