Making a morse taper shank using a taper turning attachment
I need a new morse taper 3 shank for my tailstock chuck. I could have purchased one but thought it would be interesting to gain more experience with the Colchester taper turning attachment. The result was good but equally importantly to me was the fact that I gained some more experience using the attachment which I hope will come in useful for future projects. 00:00 The existing taper shank on my tailstock drill is inadequate 01:11 Facing and turning diameter to suit the tang 02:16 Centre drilling for tailstock support in mill 02:33 Machining two flats in mill to form the tang 03:49 Returning to lathe to face other end and centre drill 04:35 Skimming live centre in preparation for between centre machining 04:44 Setting up taper turning attachment for No 3 morse taper 06:23 Setting angle using a taper sleeve between centres 07:10 Taper turning - something is wrong! 07:40 Setting the angle again in the correct direction 08:46 The taper sleeve used for set up is not accurate 09:35 Using a better quality sleeve to set up again 10:38 Returning the work to the lathe for machining the M3 taper 13:16 Test fit in the tailstock - but all is not well! 13:42 The taper has an extra parallel section caused by forgetting to remove backlash while turning the final cut 14:35 Solution is to reverse direction of cut which yields a good result 16:27 Re-machining the tang to correct for the mistake 17:33 Trial fit in tailstock using engineer's blue 19:43 Removing old taper shank 20:01 Setting taper turning attachment to machine J3 taper 21:29 Reducing diameter so bar will pass through the tailstock chuck in case after trial fit further machining is required 21:50 Machining the J3 taper 22:19 Trial fit in chuck 23:03 Removing excess length of tang 23:37 Trail fitting of tailstock chuck with its new taper shank and testing 24:49 Conclusion and next video
