Recently, I came to know that the Yamuna Bazaar ghats, counted among the oldest and most famous ghats in Delhi, are now going through a major transformation. These are the same ghats where Siberian seagulls arrive every winter for migration. For nearly four months, these birds stay here, attracting visitors and photographers from far-off places. Located along the banks of the Yamuna River, these nearly thirty-two ghats are not just centers of religious faith, but also an important part of Delhi’s cultural and social identity. Every day, people come here for prayers, ritual bathing, last rites, and shraddh ceremonies. During occasions like Purnima, Amavasya, Ekadashi, Diwali, Chhath, and Holi, huge crowds gather at these ghats. Many families also come here to perform rituals and offerings for their ancestors. But now, the Delhi government has decided to redevelop this entire area. According to the plan, a new modern ghat, similar to Vasudev Ghat, will be constructed here. Because of this, residents living in the area have been issued notices to vacate the place. Tenants have not received notices, but people who own houses here have already been informed by the authorities. As this video is being published today, these families have time only until the 31st. In just a few days, they will have to leave this place behind. According to the administration and DRA officials, this area falls under the floodplain zone, where the risk of flooding remains every year. During last year’s floods, the situation became extremely serious. Had there not been a protective wall here, the floodwater could have entered deep into Delhi. Now, the people living here have slowly started accepting the reality. Some are packing their belongings, while others are searching for new places to live. I felt it was important to capture this atmosphere, the real identity of these ghats, and the lives connected to them on camera — so that when everything changes in the future, at least these memories remain. This place is not just about the ghats. There is a cowshed here. There is an akhara where people still practice traditional wrestling and bodybuilding. Many boatmen earn their livelihood by rowing boats on the river. Some people sell religious offerings and prayer materials. And there are families who were born here, grew up here, and have remained connected to this place into old age. I did not take formal interviews with local residents in this video, but I did ask them what they plan to do next, where they will go, and how they will move forward with their lives. Because this is not just the story of houses being cleared — it is the story of an entire settlement, a way of life, and the changing culture of old Yamuna riverside Delhi. During winter, the atmosphere here becomes completely different. Around 200 to 300 people visit daily, while on Sundays the number reaches nearly 500 to 600 visitors. Pre-wedding shoots, photography, feeding birds, and boat rides — all of this continues here throughout the season. What kind of ghat the government will build in the coming days, and whether more people will come here or fewer, only time will tell. But for now, this video remains a memory of the old Yamuna ghats — a place that may soon change forever.
