To provide relief from Delhi’s extreme heat and hot winds, the Delhi Government has set up a special “Cooling Zone.” This place has been created to protect people from harsh sunlight, thirst, dehydration, and heat-related illnesses, with proper seating and resting arrangements. Large air coolers have been installed, water coolers are available for cold drinking water, and free ORS packets are being distributed so that people do not suffer from electrolyte deficiency and can stay safe from heatstroke. The best part is that this facility is not limited to just one location — one Cooling Zone has been set up in every district of Delhi. I visited the Cooling Zone near Gate No. 3 of Jama Masjid Metro Station, where tourists and local residents were seen relaxing and taking shelter from the heat. Many visitors coming to see Jama Masjid and Red Fort were also sitting there to escape the scorching temperatures. I spoke with two-wheeler riders, auto drivers, and several tourists at the site. Some tourists from Nepal were shocked by Delhi’s intense heat. They said that the temperature in their region usually stays around 28°C, but after arriving in Delhi, they truly experienced what extreme summer feels like. I welcomed them and also advised them on how to stay safe from heatstroke and hot winds. A Delhi Government volunteer present there was distributing ORS and providing necessary assistance to people. A first-aid box was also kept at the site, containing medicines for fever, headache, vomiting, gas, cough, and minor injuries so that immediate treatment could be provided whenever needed. Some people were also seen lying down and resting comfortably. At first, it seemed as if someone might have suffered from heatstroke, but later it was found that they were simply relaxing in the cool environment and were quite happy with this government initiative. Overall, people’s experience was positive, and in this unbearable heat, the Cooling Zone is truly proving to be a major relief for the public.
