Sanjay Lake, located in East Delhi near Trilokpuri Metro Station and the Pandav Nagar and Mayur Vihar areas along NH-24 (Delhi–Meerut Expressway), is a well-known urban lake. It was developed in 1982. The lake is approximately 1.5 to 2 kilometers long and about 50 to 100 meters wide, making it a significant water body in the city. The lake is considered very scenic and was once home to a large number of birds, especially ducks. It also features a bridge, swings, and park facilities, making it a popular spot for morning walks and recreation. Recently, however, a serious situation has emerged. Reports suggest that the water level in the lake has significantly dropped, and in many areas the water has completely dried up. As a result, a large number of fish have died. Dead fish have been found accumulating in the shallow and dried sections of the lake, while some fish are still seen struggling to survive. Local authorities have deployed workers for cleanup operations, who are removing dead fish and burying them in pits to prevent the spread of disease. Despite these efforts, the environmental condition remains concerning. Two types of ducks have also been observed in the lake—one indigenous variety and another hybrid, more colorful species. Due to the falling water levels and rising temperatures, the survival of these birds is also under threat. This situation is a matter of concern for local residents and environmental experts, as extreme heat, water scarcity, and possible groundwater extraction may be contributing to the degradation of this ecosystem. At present, Delhi is recording temperatures around 44°C, with the “feels like” temperature being even higher, making the situation more severe.
