A 13-hour trip from Rome to Sicily on an Italian night train. In this video, we experience a long-distance overnight journey in a top-tier luxury private sleeper car. When thinking of European sleeper trains, the "Nightjet" operated by Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) is perhaps the most well-known. Their signature navy-blue cars with a red stripe can be seen traveling not only through Austria but also Germany, Switzerland, and France. However, the country just to the south is actually a hidden superpower for sleeper trains: Italy. Because the Italian peninsula is so long, overnight travel is both highly practical and incredibly popular. The route connecting the major mainland cities to the island of Sicily in the far south is in particularly high demand. Because the southern half of Italy lacks high-speed rail, traveling to Sicily by train takes time, making sleeper services the ideal choice. Furthermore, unlike Austria's Nightjet, Italy's sleeper network consists predominantly of domestic routes. Due to its long, narrow geography and limited land borders with neighboring countries, there are fewer international sleeper services. The train we are boarding for this journey is the "Intercity Notte", an overnight service from Rome to Sicily. We depart Rome at 11:00 PM and are scheduled to arrive in Sicily by midday the following day. At dawn, the train undergoes a rare and fascinating operational procedure: the entire train is loaded onto a ferry to cross the sea! (We will cover that incredible experience in our next video).
