My Facebook page is:   / gjukulele   Many plans and things need to be viewed over a longer timeline. During this process, I can't immediately share or report anything with you. Because it's difficult to say anything, and because things haven't reached their ideal state yet. But if there are any results, I still hope to share them with everyone. Over three years ago, I unexpectedly acquired a batch of Taiwan cypress wood from Alishan. This cypress wood originated from scraps left over after a government unit sold it about fifty years ago. It was used as building material by the developer, but the volume wasn't enough for crafting. So it was stored in a warehouse until the previous generation of the developer retired. After the second generation took over, this batch of scraps, naturally stored for thirty or forty years, was given new life. Because it was new material, not removed from an old building, it hadn't been painted or had nail holes, etc., making it very beautiful and fragrant… I immediately became very excited and spoke with JungTae, a luthier from Owl in Korea, across the ocean. And he… After confirming the dimensions of the raw materials needed for making the ukulele, I happily selected some of the very best pieces, originally intended for Japanese restaurants to use as tableware… Then I discovered that Taiwan has strict regulations on the export of cypress wood, so I spent some time applying for approval. During this time, forest police from the Forestry Bureau even visited me to understand the details. After quarantine, verification, and repeated applications, I finally received the approval document. This happened more than three years ago. I haven't told you about this until now because things weren't finalized. Preparing the necessary documents and quarantine certificates in South Korea also helped me grow through the experience. Many people may have only dabbled in woodworking at some point in their lives, but to have a piece of unique wood from one's own land—a protected and rare raw material—taken to the best luthier I knew—was incredibly moving. However, the luthier assessed the material with reservations because of its extremely high oil content. Because it was new material, it hadn't been exposed to sun, rain, or wind. Because it was new material, the drying process was slower than expected. So, an experimental process was undertaken. This determined "how to choose the lacquer." This affected "how the sound would be presented." The entire process was actually filmed, but the process... Over two years have passed, and I was also ill in between, so I didn't get to edit this video. After completing the second round of lacquer selection, the results were excellent. This time, I happened to be back at the hospital for a checkup, and a brilliant idea struck me: "Why don't I go back to the home of this wood, Alishan, and unpack it there?!" Thus, today's short unpacking video came about. It's strange, really. In the studio, the smell of the wood wasn't too strong. But in the forests of Alishan, it was like salmon returning to spawn. Opening the violin case in the forest, the rich aroma of cypress filled the air. Perhaps it's just my imagination, or maybe it's just my imagination, but it still felt wonderful. Sharing with you a brief glimpse of a small achievement from this project that has lasted over three years. For me, it's not just a treasure, but truly a priceless treasure!
