It's time to relive our visit to one of Portugal's most iconic cities, Barcelos. Located in northern Portugal, Barcelos has a rich history dating back to medieval times, although the region's occupation is even older, with traces of Roman presence. Its development gained prominence from the 12th century onwards, within the context of the formation of the Kingdom of Portugal, when the region acquired strategic and administrative importance. Barcelos became the seat of a municipality and, later, was elevated to the status of a town, consolidating itself as an important local center. During the Middle Ages, the city was linked to the Portuguese nobility, especially the Counts of Barcelos, a title of great prestige in the kingdom. It was also during this period that much of its historical heritage was built, such as churches, bridges, and civil buildings that still mark the urban landscape today. Barcelos grew around the Cávado River, which played a fundamental role in the region's trade and mobility. One of the most emblematic elements of the city's identity is the legend of the Rooster of Barcelos, which has become a national symbol of Portugal. According to tradition, a roasted rooster crowed to prove the innocence of a man unjustly condemned, reinforcing the city's image as a land of justice and faith. This story helped project Barcelos internationally, associating it with Portuguese popular culture. Throughout the centuries, Barcelos maintained a strong connection with agricultural activities and crafts, particularly excelling in the production of ceramics and clay figures. In contemporary times, the city has evolved with urban growth and modernization, but without losing its traditions. Currently, Barcelos is recognized both for its historical heritage and its cultural importance, being one of the main centers of folklore and crafts in Portugal.
