Destino Portugal - Chãs de Égua

Chãs de Égua, a small mountain village located in the Serra da Estrela mountain range in Portugal, has a history marked by simplicity and a strong connection to the surrounding natural environment. Its origins date back to ancient rural communities that settled in the region, taking advantage of available resources and developing a way of life based essentially on subsistence farming and pastoralism. Like other mountain villages, life in Chãs de Égua has been conditioned for centuries by geographical isolation and harsh climatic conditions. Over time, the inhabitants adapted to the mountains, creating traditional practices linked to livestock farming, wool production, and the use of terraced agricultural land. The village has always maintained a strong community identity, with customs and traditions passed down from generation to generation, reflected in its stone architecture and the organization of its rural space. Despite never having experienced significant urban or industrial development, Chãs de Égua has preserved its authentic character and cultural heritage. In the 20th century, like many other inland towns, it faced depopulation and emigration, but managed to keep its essence alive. More recently, it has gained visibility as a tourist destination, attracting visitors with its tranquility, natural landscapes, and proximity to trails and emblematic locations in the Serra da Estrela mountain range. Today, it continues to be an example of traditional mountain life, reconciling past and present. This video is part of a program from the first season, presenting an initial approach to the history and way of life of this village.
