Abandoned Desert Homestead or Mining Camp?
Lead, silver and gold ore were discovered around 1906/07, and the first shipment was hauled out by 12 horses. In 1915, the mine was under new ownership and water was pumped from the shafts until 1927. In the 1970s, an underground survey revealed hundreds of animal skeletons. It was discovered that the water was ladened with sulphate! A six-bedroom bunkhouse and ball mill was built in the 1930s, and the head frame was constructed in the 1950s. Not long afterwards, the mine was deserted. At its peak, 75 people were employed. With closer inspection, at some point in time, the bunk house was modified into a ranch house, with corrals and pens at the rear, and gardens were planted. Due to continuous vandalism, we are not giving out the name or location of this mining camp.
