If you've ever wanted to sit with the record instead of just the voice, this is where you start. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ Searcy County, Arkansas, in the spring of nineteen forty-eight. A county tax assessor named Asaph Marrow is sent up into Coffeepot Hollow to survey a piece of land that has been delinquent on its taxes since eighteen ninety-three, and that two of his predecessors had recommended, in pencil, that the courthouse leave alone. At the back of the hollow stands a cabin nobody has lived in for fifty-five years, eleven apple trees that should not still be alive, and a flat sandstone slab with a cross cut into the face of it that the old families of Witts Springs have always called by another name. A storm in the night opens the ground at the foot of the second tree. Thirteen feet down, a brass-bound trunk is waiting. And inside the trunk, folded over a hundred and twenty sheets of paper in a tanner's careful hand, is the reason the man who buried it did not, in the autumn of eighteen ninety-three, walk back out of the hollow.A story about land that keeps what it takes, about a warning given on a store porch and ignored, and about the oldest rule the hill men of the Ozarks have always known: some things are buried because somebody knew exactly what they were burying. ━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━━ ⚠️ A NOTE ON CONTENT: This story is a work of atmospheric historical fiction inspired by Ozark and Appalachian folklore and accounts shared by listeners. All names, characters, places, and events are products of the imagination or used fictitiously, and any resemblance to real persons living or deceased, or to actual locations, is purely coincidental. Intended for mature audiences who enjoy slow, psychological horror. Contains no graphic violence.
