In Episode 3 of the Running Injury Series, I sit down once again with England 800m runner Dom Walton to break down some of the most common running injury fixes that simply don’t work — and more importantly, what actually helps runners recover, stay fit, and return to training stronger. Many runners rely on popular recovery trends like ice baths, massage guns, and quick-fix injury remedies, but do these methods really help with running injury recovery? In this episode we talk honestly about the recovery tools that are often overrated, including why Dom personally isn’t convinced by ice baths for runners, and why I’ve found massage guns to have limited impact when dealing with injuries. Instead of chasing quick fixes, we discuss what has genuinely helped during long injury periods. Dom shares how loading tendons through strength training in the gym, combined with smart cross training for runners, has allowed him to maintain fitness and even run some impressive performances after injury setbacks. We also talk about strength and conditioning for runners, how beginners can fit it into a busy schedule, and why lifting weights is becoming an essential part of modern running training and injury prevention.
