How to Record a Saxophone | Home Recording Techniques for Instruments

On this episode of Sound 101, Andrew and Thai Long Ly (recording engineer and producer that knows everything about recording all kinds of instruments) mic up Nathan Kersey-Wilson, a multi-instrumentalist with his blaring sax riffs! Again we focus on home recording techniques for instruments. This week’s challenge - how to record a saxophone with 1 and 2 microphone techniques. We cover how to pick between microphones, which pickup patterns are best for recording sax, how to place mics on a sax, the difference between the bell and the keys, and much more. Andrew and Thai end up using a variety of microphones to get this job done. You don't need to have these mics to do this though, you can take these saxophone recording tips and apply them to whatever microphones you have. If you use these techniques, you can mic a sax using any microphone.
