Tam & Echo's Adventures Day 8 Yorke Peninsula

Day 8 turned into a soggy adventure packed with geology, mining history, and a few unexpected dirt roads! We started the morning at Port Victoria Caravan Park before braving the cold rain for a wander around Port Victoria. Along the foreshore we learned about the area's fascinating geological history, including the ancient volcano that helped shape the landscape millions of years ago. We explored the information rotundas, discovered stories of local shipwrecks, walked out on the jetty in the rain, and checked out the volcanic rocks scattered along the beach. We even found a dragons egg! After drying off and warming up with breakfast back at the van, we headed inland. Despite promising ourselves we'd avoid dirt roads after the overnight rain, we somehow found ourselves travelling down several of them in search of interesting places to explore. Our first stop was the Water Resources Management Centre, where we learned about the region's dams, windmills, trough systems, water supply history, and the local geological features, including information about the earthquake rift that links back to the volcanic history around Port Victoria. From there we stopped in Maitland for a look around town and a lunch break before continuing on towards the historic mining areas. the wet weather didn't stop us from exploring Hughes Enginehouse, where we spent quite a while wandering through the ruins and learning about the copper mining history that helped build the Yorke Peninsula. We also visited Richmond's Enginehouse, checked out the old crusher site, and climbed up Tailings Heap for some fantastic views across the surrounding countryside and mining landscape. Later in the afternoon we called into the Moonta Railway precinct, where we explored the historic schoolhouse museum and learned a little more about life in the area's mining days. The railway station itself what closed, so that will have to wait for another visit. We finished the day settling into the Moonta RV Overnight Stop, finding ourselves a quiet spot on the edge of the campground. After dinner and a chance to finally dry out, we're relaxing for the evening and looking forward to seeing where the road takes us tomorrow.
