The Campo Santo Cemetery is a necropolis located in the Brazilian municipality of Salvador. The cemetery is known for its beautiful images of saints, which constitute an open-air museum. It is the oldest in Salvador and one of the oldest in Brazil, being the largest in the North, Northeast, and Central-West regions of Brazil. It is located in the Federação neighborhood. It contains the cryptic remains of the most prominent figures in the state. Its administration is overseen by the Santa Casa de Misericórdia da Bahia. The construction of a specific place where the living could pray near their dead was part of the first construction project for Campo Santo, inaugurated in 1836. Created to meet the demand arising from the prohibition of burials in churches and convents, Campo Santo was affected in the same year by the movement known as "Cemiterada," when it was invaded and almost completely destroyed by members of religious brotherhoods and sympathizers. During this invasion, in addition to the entire front wall, part of the chapel was demolished. The Santa Casa de Misericórdia acquired the Campo Santo cemetery in 1840, and the following year began work to rebuild it. Due to a lack of resources, it was only in 1870 that construction of the current chapel began, designed by the architect Carlos Croezy.
