It is estimated that between 60,000 and 100,000 people were buried there, including enslaved people, indigenous people, the poor, excommunicated people, rebels and those sentenced to death. Among those buried were victims of the “Malês Revolt” (1835), an uprising led by Muslim slaves seeking religious freedom and the end of slavery. The site is also said to have received the bodies of leaders of the Búzios Revolt (1799), the Pernambuco Revolution (1817) and Africans who died on slave ships. The discovery was initiated by cartographic studies conducted by Silvana Olivieri, based on maps from the 18th and 19th centuries, cross-referenced with current data. The excavation, coordinated by Jeanne Almeida Dias and authorized by IPHAN, may confirm one of the largest archaeological sites related to slavery in Brazil. The ongoing archaeological investigation is looking for material remains and bones that have withstood the test of time, abandonment and the inhumane disposal of bodies. This discovery has the potential to rewrite part of the history of slave-owning Brazil and the resistance struggles during the colonial and imperial periods.
