Ruby Bridges, in 1960 at the age of 6, became the first Black girl to attend an all-white school. This decision had fatal consequences for the girl and her family. One of the saddest events in recent American history. White teachers refused to let her into their classrooms, white parents hid their children, and boys refused to play with her. The girl had to endure insults, demonstrations, protests, and threats from white parents every time she attended school. For an entire year, she had a teacher all to herself, under FBI guard, for fear that she might be attacked. By court order, schools in the South could not discriminate between white and Black children. But in New Orleans, the ruling was not being enforced.
