Three men had an appointment at Achnacarry Castle—one Dutchman, one American, and one Englishman. The Dutchman was Henri Deterding; he was nicknamed the 'Napoleon of Oil' for his exploitation of oil reserves found in Sumatra. By partnering with a wealthy shipowner and a merchant promoting a product called 'Shell,' he founded Royal Dutch Shell. The American was Walter C. Teagle, representing the Standard Oil Company (the predecessor to Exxon), which had been founded by John D. Rockefeller when he was just 31. Oil wells, transport, refining, and distribution—everything was under the control of Standard Oil. The Englishman was Sir John Cadman, Director of the Anglo-Persian Oil Company, which would soon be known as BP. At the instigation of a young Winston Churchill, the British government held a stake in BP, and the Royal Navy had converted its fuel source from coal to oil.
