The government, through the Ministry of Agriculture, has moved quickly to respond to complaints from oil palm farmers regarding the plummeting price of fresh fruit bunches (FFB) in various regions across Indonesia. In a meeting with palm oil industry players, the Deputy Minister of Agriculture revealed that 139 palm oil mills (PKS) were identified as purchasing FFB below the regionally determined price. From the results of an evaluation over the past two days, 16 companies have reportedly begun raising their FFB purchase prices. However, the government believes many other companies have not yet adjusted their prices according to regulations, leading to a follow-up meeting involving more parties, including farmer associations, exporters, refineries, and state-owned plantation companies. In the meeting, the government emphasized that global palm oil prices remain stable and even tend to increase. Global demand has also not decreased. Therefore, the government suspects the main problem lies within the national palm oil industry's distribution chain. The government also explained the role of PT DSI, which will manage the export system more transparently. The Deputy Minister emphasized that PT DSI was not established to seek profit, but rather to curb practices such as under-invoicing, under-pricing, and transfer pricing, which are considered detrimental to the state and farmers. Furthermore, the government has requested that regional heads actively monitor the purchase price of fresh fruit bunches (FFB) in their respective regions, in accordance with Ministerial Regulation No. 13 of 2020. If violations are found, the government will impose administrative sanctions, including permit revocation, against companies violating the regulations. The oil palm farmer association also commended the government's swift action, as fresh fruit bunch prices have begun to rise, albeit at a limited rate. Farmers hope that palm oil prices will return to normal, thereby improving their welfare.
