Minister of Agriculture Andi Amran Sulaiman is stepping up efforts to build a national garlic ecosystem from upstream to downstream as a step towards achieving self-sufficiency and reducing dependence on imports. Through collaboration between farmers, state-owned food enterprises (SOEs), and the private sector, Indonesia is targeted to be able to meet its garlic needs independently within the next three years. In a meeting with farmers, PTPN (State-Owned Enterprises), ID Food, Bulog (Logistics Agency), and other stakeholders at the Ministry of Agriculture Headquarters in Jakarta on Wednesday (June 17, 2026), Minister Amran emphasized that achieving garlic self-sufficiency will be achieved through the development of a comprehensive ecosystem, starting from seed provision, production facility support, price guarantees, and harvest absorption. The government will strengthen national seed production through the involvement of farmers, the private sector, and SOEs. The seeds produced will be absorbed and redistributed to expand planting areas, supported by the establishment of the HPP for wet garlic, the provision of agricultural machinery (alsintan), and import controls to increase domestic production's competitiveness. Similarly, the Deputy Minister of Agriculture stated that strengthening the ecosystem is key to reducing dependence on garlic imports, which currently stands at over 90 percent. With a land development target of around 100,000 hectares, garlic self-sufficiency is believed to be achievable within 3-4 years. According to the Deputy Minister of Agriculture, the main challenge in garlic development is not farmer interest, but rather the availability of seeds in large quantities and the suitability of varieties to Indonesia's agro-climatic conditions. Therefore, the Ministry of Agriculture is accelerating mass seeding in key centers such as Sembalun, Temanggung, and Humbang Hasundutan, and is preparing a seed bridging scheme as initial capital for farmer breeders. Bedjo Supriyanto, a garlic farmer from Tawangmangu, Karanganyar Regency, welcomed this move.
