Does prayer of petition, asking for good things in prayer, make sense? If God is eternal and omnipotent, why explicitly invoke graces, healings, "daily bread," or even forgiveness? What is the point of an invitation, like Pope Francis's, to pray for God to end the pandemic? Is it really against true and sincere spirituality, as some theologians maintain? The discussion is actually not simple, because it calls into question our understanding of how our relationship with God is even possible and requires us to rediscover the famous distinction between the "first cause" (himself) and the "secondary causes," which participate in the governance of the world in the order of His Providence.
