The chains are gone, and the wolf is loose. This is the morning that ends all mornings. Brother strikes brother. The riders of fire come from the south. The serpent lifts the sea. Fenrir opens a mouth as wide as the world — and swallows the one who once set him free. Thor strikes the snake, walks nine last steps, and falls. Surtr's fire plays against heaven itself. Then the sun turns black. The earth sinks into the sea. The bright stars vanish from the sky. And the great war drum, which has raced faster and faster toward this moment, strikes once more — the loudest of all — and then there is silence. But the Völva did not end her song with the dark. Out of the silence, one voice. Out of the sea, a green and living earth. Two who hid through the fire — Líf and Lífþrasir — wake and come home. And the old Sun, before she died, bore a daughter: a new light, a second dawn. The world begins again.
