✋ TÝR — god of war, of law, of the spoken oath. The bravest of the Æsir, and the only one who would step forward when no one else would. The wolf Fenrir grew so large in Asgard that no chain on earth could hold him. Lædingr snapped. Dromi shattered. The gods rode to the dwarves and asked for something impossible. The dwarves forged Gleipnir — a ribbon soft as silk, light as a breath, woven from six things that should not exist: the sound of a cat's footstep, the beard of a woman, the roots of a mountain, the sinews of a bear, the breath of a fish, the spittle of a bird. But Fenrir was no fool. He saw the eyes of the gods and laughed — "I will wear this ribbon, if one of you will place a hand inside my mouth as a pledge that you do not lie." The Æsir looked at each other. The Æsir looked away. Only Týr stepped forward. Calm. Quiet. He placed his right hand between the wolf's teeth. Gleipnir held. Fenrir thrashed. And the wolf bit the hand off at the place the gods would later call "the wolf-joint" — úlfliðr — the wrist. The world was bound. One god paid the price.
