Travel Day Two: Bumpy Roads, Rhinos, Sheep & a New Time Zone

Day Two of the Gippsland to West Australia Adventure sees us leave Horsham and head west to Tailem Bend — crossing one of Australia’s most baffling inventions: a 30‑minute time zone. Still not convinced that solves anything. The drive took us through Dimboola, Nhill, Kaniva, Bordertown, Keith, Tintinara and Coonalpyn, all without a single traffic jam — which sounds ideal until you discover the roads were so uneven they turned the entire journey into a full‑scale suspension stress test. Progress was slower than planned, the caravan bounced enthusiastically, but the good news is… nothing broke. Along the way we took in sheep art, silo art, and one of South Australia’s finest roadside oddities — Cosi’s Rhino — proving once again that Australia refuses to let a long drive be boring. We arrived at the Waterfront Holiday Park in Tailem Bend, where we stayed for two days so the Gragok can work from the caravan. It’s an adults‑only park, which makes it peaceful, relaxing, and — while we love our children and grandchildren — delightfully free of other people’s children. Join us as the sun sets over the Murray River and we reflect on another successful day heading west, a confusing time change, and the comforting knowledge that it is, once again… gin o’clock.
