Travel Day Four - Port Augusta to Ceduna: The Day Poochera Didn’t Happen
Today’s journey was supposed to be a sensible one. The plan was simple: leave Port Augusta, take it easy, and stop overnight in Poochera. But as any seasoned road‑tripper knows, plans are really just suggestions — and when the driving is good, the roads are kind, and nothing is rattling ominously… you carry on. So instead, we pushed on. This leg of the trip took us west from Port Augusta toward Ceduna, with a few essential Australian detours along the way. We stopped at Iron Knob, the birthplace of Australia’s steel industry, where the landscape tells its story honestly and without decoration. Then on to Kimba, home to the unmistakable giant flaming galah and its equally oversized joey — because Australia insists that no long drive is complete without at least one enormous roadside object. What was meant to be a shorter day became a longer one, but an easier one. No drama, no breakdowns, and no sudden need to rethink life choices — always a win. By the time Ceduna rolled into view, it was clear that skipping Poochera had been the right call. Another stretch conquered. Another plan rewritten. And next time… the real adventure begins, as we leave Ceduna behind and take on the Nullarbor.
