This is how I sometimes whip up a quick and easy miso soup. Now that I have lived in Japan I feel like I can say for sure that most people do not make homemade dashi. It just takes too much time and the msg products (hondashi) or premade dashi packets are great for adding flavor to a quick and simple bowl of soup.
