Extreme Flying: The Red Arrows' Most Dangerous Stunts Revealed
The documentary follows the world-famous Red Arrows display team since the autumn of 2017, which began filming as a new team leader joined the Red Arrows ahead of their 2018 displays. Through unprecedented access showing behind-the-scenes, we learn it’s been a tumultuous year for the squadron, during which it was told its home at RAF Scampton would close and be sold off. Now the team is preparing for its "biggest tour for a generation", with the team's newest pilot, Flt Lt Jon Bond, believing it’s a fantastic opportunity to display the “best of British overseas." In this episode, we follow the Red Arrow pilots just returning from their two week Christmas break. In their gruelling winter training they have three practice flights a day, five days a week, with erratic changes in the weather that can quickly halt any display attempts. New recruits have to learn the advanced flying skills required for the Red Arrows’ heart-stopping routines, including one routine that sees pilots flying upside down, above another jet, and extremely close to the ground. We also see how pilots learn to survive following an ejection, as well as a close look at parachute training and sea survival.
