Running The Brighton Marathon - The Marathon With So Much Character!

Ever wanted to run the Brighton Marathon? Let me take you along for the ride! Here's my perspective running this fun marathon. After a year of cancellations and postponements, the Brighton Marathon was pushed back to 12 September 2021. Boy was it worth the wait. I rocked up in the city early on race day morning with my brother, Jack, who was also running the marathon. It quickly became apparent that there wasn’t a cloud in sight and it was already starting to get pretty warm at around 8am. From the weather forecasts, we knew we were in for a hot day. We didn’t realise just how hot it was going to be. I started in the very first (white) wave at 9.30am and had the pleasure of being amongst the first participants to complete the course. The Brighton Marathon is split into a few main sections. Starting in Preston Park, it first winds through the city and then takes runners along the main road into Brighton along the coast. After looping on yourself, you're brought all the way along the main parade by Brighton Pier and then go back through the city before looping a very long residential street. Next up, you head through an industrial district before making an epic final run the entire length of the sea front promenade before finishing in the race village. Finishing in 3h and 17m, this was my slowest marathon (my other times being 3h 3m and 3h 13m). Whilst I was a little disappointed with this, the heat and being directly exposed to the sun for over 80% of the course made this a very tricky race. I’d highly recommend the Brighton Marathon to anyone interested in distance running, who wants a challenge, or who simply wants to explore a beautiful city on the coast of southern England.
