In February 2013, employees of a Hamburg auction house were preparing for an auction when a man appeared and asked to see expensive jewelry he wanted to buy for a client abroad. Hours later, he returned—but this time he pulled a pistol from his pocket, threatened an employee, and took the most valuable pieces from the display case. During his escape through the building, the managing director suddenly blocked his path. A shot rang out, and the perpetrator fled unmolested. The robbery squad of the Hamburg State Criminal Police Office (LKA) had never investigated such a case before. Not only was the crime scene unusual, but also the modus operandi of the initially unknown perpetrator: unmasked, no gloves, and arriving by taxi. It was as if he had deliberately set out to be caught. Later, he claimed that the jewel robbery at the auction house was to be his last. Our guest in the podcast studio: Chief Detective Christian Meinke of the Hamburg LKA. In conversation with Rudi Cerne and Conny Neumeyer, he recounts the perpetrator's criminal career: a successful business owner whose shady dealings and drug use led him astray within just a few years.
