Geller Sacrificed Everything… Then Won the Endgame || Efim Geller vs Anatoly Karpov Moscow 1976
Efim Geller takes on the newly crowned World Champion, Anatoly Karpov, in a fascinating clash between dynamic initiative and strategic defense. Karpov chooses the French Defense, aiming for the solid, patient style that would become his trademark. Geller, however, has different plans. From the very beginning, White looks for ways to open the position before Black can complete development and bring the king to safety. The critical moment arrives just before Black is ready to castle. Geller unleashes a spectacular exchange sacrifice on b8. At first glance, the sacrifice appears surprising, but it carries a clear purpose: destroy Black's castling plans, win a crucial pawn, and bring the white queen deep into the attack with tempo. The initiative grows with every move. Then comes another brilliant tactical idea. Geller temporarily sacrifices the queen in a perfectly calculated combination, knowing that Black has no choice but to return the queen a few moves later. By the time the complications are over, White has recovered the queen, regained the exchange, and emerged with a favorable endgame and an extra pawn or two. From there, the outcome is largely a matter of technique. Although Karpov fights on with his characteristic determination, the position offers no real saving chances. Geller steadily converts his material advantage, and the World Champion is eventually forced to resign. A brilliant demonstration of: initiative over material, attacking precision, tactical calculation, and converting dynamic play into a technically winning endgame. #chess #efimgeller #anatolykarpov #frenchdefense #chesstactics #endgame #chessgame just brains, no engines. • Limited Edition Florin Gheorghiu Art in Ch...
