Firth of Forth, Sea Kayaking Islands and Bridges Trip (Day 2 of 3 days)

Day 2 of 3 during our Sea Kayaking Trip, today we leave our camp spot on Inchcolm and journey East to camp and spend the day exploring the Island and fortifications of Inchkeith, once a military stronghold out in the middle of the Firth of Forth. The remote Island which is rarely visited now is a haven for wildlife, nesting birds and rabbits. The old fortifications cover the entire Island with their underground tunnels, huge gun emplacements, ammunition magazines, watchtowers, accommodation buildings and of course the lighthouse. At this time of year we had to share the Island with thousands of gulls and Eider ducks that were occupying the many buildings and walkways across the whole Island. While the gulls easily took flight as we wandered around the Eider sat on their nests often 3 or 4 to a room and each motionless as if to say I'm not here! We'd heard reports that the Island was also infested with rats living off the abundant wildlife, so after having a waterproof bag chewed through by rats on iInchcolm I decided it was more prudent to pitch our tents on the harbour wall away from any buildings or ground the rats may inhabit.
