Section from Portskerra pier to Rubha Beag (NC 8672 6663). Includes spectacular cliffs with caves, natural arches and sea stacks in cliffs of Moine gneisses which has been subjected to heat and deformation (migmatised) over several phases during the Ordovician, Grampian Orogeny (mountain building phase). The Moine rocks were originally originally layers of sandy and muddy sediments deposited in a shallow sea on top of eroded Lewisian-like rocks, laid down approximately 1,000 million to 800 million years ago. Then present at the eastern margin of Laurentia. Granite intrusions are visible, intruding the Moine strata, from a much earlier age.
