Our $35,000 House in Japan Needed Major Repairs… Would You Take This On?

Three years after buying our 200-year-old Japanese house in rural Japan, we’ve finally begun the biggest repairs the house has needed so far. In this video, parts of our traditional kominka are opened up for major restoration and structural repairs, revealing old timber, hidden damage, and construction details we’ve never seen before. Restoring an old house in rural Japan is never simple, and every stage of the renovation seems to uncover something unexpected. Our kominka home in Shimane Prefecture was once a former sake brewery, and preserving this historic building has become a much bigger journey than we ever expected. We bought it as an akiya, or empty house, After years of planning, saving, and slowly learning how these traditional Japanese houses were built, it was finally time to begin the major repair work.
